What CTE Is

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative condition linked to repeated head impacts or blast exposure. It can affect mood, memory, thinking, behavior, and daily functioning.

How It Develops

Researchers believe CTE develops over years as abnormal proteins build up in the brain — particularly in areas responsible for regulation, impulse control, and emotional balance.

Why It's Hard to Diagnose

Current medical tools cannot diagnose CTE in living patients. Instead, doctors evaluate patterns of symptoms, a history of repeated head trauma, and how symptoms progress over time.

Who's Most at Risk

  • Military veterans
  • Contact-sport athletes
  • Survivors of domestic violence
  • Anyone with repeated head impacts or blast exposure
