Rob and Heather’s Story: Brain Injury, Caregiving, and Finding a Voice
Share
Recorded at the Menifee Veterans Expo. Our thanks to Sheryl Alexa Shaffer, VETART (The Veterans Art Project), and Veterans Helping Veterans TV for helping us share this conversation.
In this recorded conversation, Rob and Heather Robbins share the experiences behind Robbins Nest Alliance. Rob speaks as an Army veteran living with the effects of brain injury. Heather speaks as his wife and caregiver.
Rob’s experience
Rob recounts a series of injuries during his military years and describes how symptoms later affected his work and daily life. He also talks about the difficulty of remembering the injuries themselves and the long process of understanding what was happening.
Heather’s perspective
Heather shares how they met, how reviewing medical records helped them understand more of Rob’s history, and what it has been like to navigate benefits, behavioral changes, and the search for care together.
She describes a difficult period in their lives and the improvements they experienced after finding a neurologist and a medication that helped. Their account reflects their own experience.
Why they began sharing
Heather explains that sharing her caregiving experiences brought responses from people facing similar struggles. Those conversations helped shape Robbins Nest Alliance and its focus on understandable, source-based education for caregivers, veterans, survivors, and families.
Rob and Heather describe learning as something that helps them understand their own situation and connect with others. This recording brings both perspectives into the same conversation.
